Two drug smugglers, including Chiranjit Shil alias Gedu, described as a close associate of Dhanpur Mandal president Bipul Majumder, were apprehended by the BSF after being found in possession of Yaba tablets.
Police sources said that, Gedu and his associate Yasin Miah were detained during a BSF operation. Gedu had previously come under the spotlight after a pistol was allegedly recovered from his residence by the BSF last year.
Local sources said that political pressure was exerted at that time, following which he was released by the police. Similar allegations of political intervention reportedly surfaced during the latest incident late Monday night.
Gedu had also reportedly been jailed in 2023 in connection with an NDPS case.
At present, Gedu and Yasin Miah are in the custody of Jatrapur police station of Sepahijala district and sources claimed that efforts were being made by politically influential individuals to secure their release.
The allegations regarding the recovery, previous cases and alleged political intervention could not be independently verified. Further details are awaited as police proceed with the matter.
