In a major milestone for medical education in Tripura, the MBBS intake capacity at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has been increased from 150 to 250 seats. With this expansion, an additional 100 MBBS seats will be available for students seeking admission in the 2026–27 academic session.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Monday said the expansion would create greater opportunities for the state's youth to pursue medical education while significantly strengthening Tripura’s medical education system and healthcare services.
The Chief Minister also expressed his sincere gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J P Nadda for their continued support in strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Tripura.
With the enhanced intake capacity, AGMC has now joined the league of premier medical colleges in the country that are authorized to admit 250 MBBS students—the maximum intake permitted by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Institutions in this category include Maulana Azad Medical College (New Delhi), B.J. Medical College (Ahmedabad, Gujarat), Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (Karnataka), SMS Medical College (Jaipur, Rajasthan), Madras Medical College (Chennai, Tamil Nadu), and King George's Medical University (Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh), among others.
The Chief Minister said that a stronger medical education system today would help build a healthier and more prosperous Tripura in the years to come.
