A young man in Agartala allegedly fell victim to a fraud carried out by two men posing as monks (Sadhus) and shortly after realizing he had been cheated, the victim tracked down the accused and handed them over to the police on Saturday.
Speaking with media persons, the victim youth, Shubhajit Roy Chowdhury said , the two men, claiming to be holy men from Uttar Pradesh, approached him on a road in Agartala and requested Rs 100 for food. Out of compassion, he gave them the money. In return, the men handed him an amulet (Tabij).
A short while later, the two allegedly asked Shubhajit how much money he had in his wallet. Trusting them, he showed the cash in his possession. Taking advantage of the situation, the accused allegedly tricked him and took the money before leaving the area.
After realizing that he had been deceived, Shubhajit began searching for the two men across different parts of Agartala city. He eventually spotted them in front of Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan and managed to detain them.
He immediately informed the police, following which personnel from West Agartala police station arrived at the spot and took both individuals into custody.
Police sources said that the Aadhaar cards recovered from the detained men indicate that they are residents of Agra district in Uttar Pradesh. An investigation has been initiated, and police are verifying the allegations of fraud and examining all aspects of the incident.
Police have urged citizens to remain cautious of strangers seeking money or offering charms, amulets, or similar items under false pretences.
