A district court in South Tripura has sentenced a man to life imprisonment after convicting him in the sensational murder of 43-year-old Manoranjan Tripura Bar in Baikhora police station area . The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the convict.
The judgment was delivered on Thursday by the South Tripura District and Sessions Judge Gobinda Das at the Belonia District and Sessions Court. The prosecution was represented by Public Prosecutor Subrata Bhattacharjee.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place on the night of February 23, 2025, in the Sathbhuiya Bari area of Jolaibari. Manoranjan Tripura, along with several others, was sitting in front of the shop of Molin Das Tripura and smoking a hookah when the accused, Chandrakumar Tripura (30), allegedly arrived armed with a sharp machete (Dao).
The prosecution stated that the accused, without any apparent provocation, launched a brutal attack on Manoranjan, repeatedly striking him on the face, head and other parts of the body. Manoranjan sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot.
Public persecutor stated that hearing the commotion, the victim's wife and daughter rushed to the scene and witnessed the accused attacking Manoranjan with the Dao. Frightened by their screams, the accused fled the spot.
A murder case was subsequently registered at Baikhora police station. The investigation was conducted by then Sub-Inspector (SI) Khokon Chandra Saha, who later submitted the charge sheet before the court.
During the trial, the court examined 17 witnesses, including the investigating officer, medical experts and forensic specialists. After reviewing the oral evidence, forensic findings and other documentary records, the court found Chandrakumar Tripura guilty of murdering Manoranjan Tripura.
Treating the offence as a case of murder, the court sentenced the convict to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 25,000. Following the pronouncement of the judgment, Chandrakumar Tripura was sent to Belonia jail to serve his sentence.
