Member of Rajya Sabha and former BJP’s state unit president Rajib Bhattacharjee on Sunday assured residents of the Vidyasagar area of Agartala that steps would be taken to construct a sluice gate to address the chronic water logging problem that affects the locality during the Monsoon season.

The Vidyasagar area has been grappling with severe water logging for years due to the backflow of water from the Howrah River through a drainage channel connecting Bankumari and Vidyasagar. The reverse flow frequently inundates the local market and adjoining residential areas, causing considerable hardship to residents.

During a visit to the affected area on Sunday, the MP inspected the drainage system and reviewed the extent of the problem. Following the inspection, Bhattacharjee stated that the construction of a sluice gate at the drainage outlet would significantly reduce the inflow of river water and provide a long-term solution to the recurring issue.

He assured local residents that the matter would be taken up on priority and that necessary measures would be initiated to implement the project at the earliest.

Apart from reviewing the water logging situation, the MP also inspected the proposed site for a ward office and the area earmarked for the development of a vendor zone in Vidyasagar. Councilor of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Ward No. 30, Pintu Ranjan Das, along with local residents, accompanied the MP during the visit.
