Nationwide ‘Smart Meter Pakhwada’ promotes transparent and hassle-free consumer-friendly power services
In a major initiative to modernize power services and strengthen consumer awareness, Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited has been observing “Smart Meter Pakhwada” across the state in line with a nationwide campaign. The awareness programme began on February 9 and will continue until February 23, 2026, aiming to educate electricity consumers about the benefits and functioning of smart meters.
According to officials of the corporation, the primary objective of this initiative is to simplify the understanding of smart meter technology and highlight its advantages for consumers. Smart meters are designed to make electricity services more convenient, transparent, and consumer-friendly. The system ensures hassle-free billing and significantly reduces confusion related to electricity charges. It also enables consumers to monitor and control their electricity consumption more effectively.
As part of the fortnight-long programme, awareness camps are being conducted at district, Nagar Panchayat, and Gram Panchayat levels. In addition to these camps, door-to-door and community-level campaigns are also being organized to reach consumers directly. Between February 9 and February 13, a total of 31 awareness camps were conducted across various districts of the state. West Tripura recorded the highest number with 10 camps. Gomati district hosted 8 camps, while South Tripura and North Tripura organized 4 camps each. Sepahijala and Khowai districts conducted 2 camps each, and Dhalai district organized 1 camp.
These awareness camps include interactive consumer sessions and open discussions, allowing residents to directly engage with officials and clarify their doubts regarding smart meters. Informative leaflets are also being distributed to help consumers understand the benefits in simple and clear language. Live demonstrations are being conducted to show how smart meters function and how they provide real-time data on electricity consumption.
Experts associated with the programme stated that smart meters allow consumers to track their power usage instantly. This real-time monitoring helps reduce unnecessary electricity wastage and encourages responsible energy consumption. Furthermore, automated billing through smart meters reduces the chances of billing errors and eliminates the problem of inflated or incorrect bills, ensuring a fair and transparent billing system.
As part of the campaign, help desks and kiosks have been set up at important public locations across the state. These support centres are assisting consumers by addressing queries related to smart meters and demonstrating how the consumer mobile application can be used to monitor electricity usage. With this digital facility, consumers can access their consumption data from home and get advance insights into their electricity bills.
Officials of the corporation emphasized that smart meters will play a crucial role in making electricity services more efficient while saving time and effort for consumers. The adoption of advanced technology in the power sector is expected to improve service quality and ensure accurate and transparent service delivery.
The corporation has appealed to all electricity consumers to actively participate in the awareness camps and take advantage of this initiative. Authorities believe that smart meters are not just a technological upgrade but a significant step towards building a reliable, efficient, and future-ready power distribution system for the state.
