‘Students Day’ celebrated for first time in Tripura at Agartala Public School

In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Tripura, Agartala Public School, English Medium celebrated the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam as ‘Students Day’, marking a historic and inspiring tribute to the visionary known as the “Missile Man of India.”
The event took place at Sukanta Academy Auditorium here in Agartala city on Wednesday witnessed participation from dignitaries, students, and educators who reflected on Dr Kalam’s enduring legacy as a scientist, teacher and President.
Tripura’s Minister for Science, Technology and Environment Animesh Debbarma, gracing the occasion as chief guest, lauded the school’s noble initiative and announced his commitment to propose the official recognition of October 15 as Students’ Day in the upcoming Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Prof Dr Manik Saha.
“I was unaware that this day is globally observed as Students Day until I learned it from Arun Nath. After searching online, I realized its significance. Every year, there is a theme based on innovation and discovery, and this year’s theme ‘Empowering Students as Agents of Innovation and Change’ perfectly defines Dr Kalam’s vision,” said Minister Debbarma.
He added, “Dr Kalam proved that one does not need to be born in a rich family to make great discoveries. His life teaches us that dedication and learning can overcome any obstacle. I assure you, I will raise this matter in the Cabinet so that Tripura officially celebrates Students Day every year.”
Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder praised the school’s leadership, stating, “Agartala Public School has shown the way by honouring Dr Kalam’s vision. Students are the architects of our nation’s future, and their active role in social change must be celebrated.”
Prof Purnendu Kanti Das (Retd) highlighted UNESCO’s recognition of Dr Kalam’s birthday as Students Day, narrating his journey from a poor boy selling newspapers to the President of India. “His story reminds every student that no dream is too distant when pursued with dedication,” he said.
School Secretary and founder Arun Nath expressed pride in organizing the event, noting, “The United Nations recognized this day in 2010, but Tripura has not yet observed it officially. Our aim is to inspire a statewide observance of Students Day to honour Dr Kalam’s contribution to education and nation-building.”
President of the School Management Committee Dr Sajal Nath presided over the programme.
The celebration was attended by students, parents, teachers and non-teaching staff, who together paid heartfelt tribute to the great scientist, visionary and eternal teacher Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
