Thieves looted donation box from Durgabari temple in Sonamura

Sometimes it’s the Ramthakur Seva Mandir, sometimes the Durgabari, and at other times even the Sub-Divisional Officer’s office canteen — the people of Sonamura are fed up with the constant nuisance caused by drug addicts!
To order meet their demand for addiction, they are breaking into not only houses but also temples in the very heart of the town every night. Even the canteen of the Sonamura Sub-Divisional Officer’s office hasn’t been spared. Locals are blaming the administration’s failure.
According to reports, last night miscreants broke open the donation box of Sonamura’s historic Durgabari temple. They took away all the money kept inside. The temple authorities said that the donation box is usually opened after Diwali (Kali Puja) every year, and a considerable amount collected from it is used for the temple’s development work. However, when the authorities arrived at the temple on Thursday, they discovered the theft.
The incident, which took place right next to the Sonamura District and Sessions Judge’s Court and the SDO’s office, has caused a huge stir in the entire area. Moreover, a few days earlier, thieves had also targeted the canteen of the Sonamura SDO’s office, taking away gas cylinders and several valuable items.
Frequent thefts of this kind have robbed the residents of their peace at night. Many locals believe that the growing drug menace is the root cause behind these thefts — something the local police administration has failed to control. The thieves are allegedly committing such crimes to fund their addiction.
Later, members of the Durgabari Temple Committee filed a complaint at the Sonamura police station. Police visited the temple and inspected the scene. Residents are holding the administration responsible for these recurring incidents and are demanding stronger security arrangements.
