Amid heightened border security along the India-Bangladesh frontier, infiltration attempts from neighbouring Bangladesh into Tripura continue to pose challenges for security agencies. On Monday, North Tripura district police arrested three Bangladeshi nationals along with an Indian human trafficker for allegedly attempting to cross the international border illegally.

Security forces have intensified vigilance along the border in recent months, leading to a significant reduction in infiltration attempts. The Border Security Force (BSF) has also stepped up operations to detect and push back illegal entrants along the border stretches of Tripura and other northeastern states.

Police sources said , the latest incident came to light on June 7 when BSF personnel intercepted an e-rickshaw near the Ranibari Border Outpost (BOP) in the Kadamtala border area. Three suspected Bangladeshi nationals and the vehicle's driver were detained and subsequently handed over to Kadamtala police for further investigation.

During interrogation, the three individuals reportedly admitted to being Bangladeshi citizens. They allegedly confessed to entering India without valid travel documents and were attempting to return to Bangladesh through an unauthorized route.

A case has been registered at Kadamtala police station under Sections 21 and 23(a) of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.

Investigators identified one of the accused as Sohel Miah, who reportedly told police that he had illegally entered India around three months ago with the assistance of local facilitators. He claimed to have been residing in the Shantipur area under Pecharthal police station in Assam. According to police, the group was attempting to return to Bangladesh with the help of the arrested auto-rickshaw driver, identified as Manik Roy.

As part of the investigation, police have recorded statements from several witnesses and seized two mobile phones along with other incriminating materials from the accused.

Seeking further interrogation, the investigating agency has approached the court for the addition of Section 249 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and requested three days of police remand for the accused to facilitate a detailed probe into the alleged human trafficking and illegal border-crossing network.

Police said the investigation is continuing to identify others who may have been involved in facilitating the illegal entry and movement of the Bangladeshi nationals.
