Pakistan: Gilgit-Baltistan witnesses protests over wheat rate hike
Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region on Friday witnessed a shutter-down strike against an increase in the rate of subsidised wheat, media reports said.
The rate of wheat, which was heavily subsidised for the region, has significantly increased over the past six months — first from Rs7.5 to Rs20 per kilogram in June and then recently to Rs52 per kg, reported Dawn News.
The protest 10 districts of Gilgit-Baltistan was called by Awami Action Committee (AAC).
It is an alliance of political parties and traders' unions.
Business activities in the region remained suspended from morning.
In Skardu, a protest was held at the Yadgar Chowk. The protesters rejected the hike in wheat prices and chanted slogans against the government, reported Dawn News.
Protesters said their agitation will continue if price hike was not withdrawn.
