Celebrating 554th Prakash Purb of Sri Guru Nanak Dev

Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, was born on Kartik Puranmashi, in 1469 in the village of Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib). This year marks the 554th anniversary of his birth, celebrated as Prakash Purb by Sikhs around the world.


Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s life and teachings were a beacon of enlightenment and unity, emphasizing the Oneness of God, the equality of all humanity, and the importance of living a truthful and compassionate life. He traveled extensively throughout India, Central Asia, and the Middle East, spreading his message of love, peace, and tolerance.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Teachings

Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings are enshrined in the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs. His message is universal and resonates with people of all faiths and backgrounds. Some of his key teachings include:

Ik Onkar: The Oneness of God.

Naam Simran: The constant remembrance of God’s name.

Seva: Selfless service to others.

Vand Chakko: Sharing one’s earnings with others.

Prakash Purb Celebrations

Prakash Purb is a joyous occasion for Sikhs around the world. Gurdwaras, Sikh temples, are decorated with lights and flowers, and special prayers are offered. Sikhs also engage in seva, volunteering their time and resources to serve the community.

In addition to religious ceremonies, Prakash Purb is also marked by a number of cultural events, such as nagar kirtans (religious processions), kirtan programs (musical performances of devotional hymns), and langar (free communal meals).

Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s legacy lives on in the lives of millions of Sikhs around the world. His teachings continue to inspire and guide people to live a life of righteousness, compassion, and service.
