He was hospitalised on April 25 with complaints of brain hemorrhage and thereafter developed breathing trouble. He breathed his last at 5:45 pm in Kolkata.
A prolific writer, Majumdar was best known for his Animesh series of novels- Kalbela, Uttaradhikar, and Kalpurush-all of which were set in the backdrop of the Naxalite movement in the 1960s and 70s.
These three novels of the series, now considered modern classics, were published between 1979 and 1989.
Kalbela was serialized in the prestigious literary magazine Desh in 1981-1982, and won the Sahitya Akademi Prize in 1984.
Majumdar was also known for creating the detective character Arjun, who is the central character of the 2013 film Arjun – Kalimpong E Sitaharan.
Being a versatile writer, many of his novels have a touch of thrill and suspense attached to them.
His other popular novels include Aath Kuthuri Noy Daraja, Bandinibash, Daybadhha, and Buno Haansher Palak. Perhaps his most famous novel is Saatkahon.
Majumdar has worked on short stories, novels, travelogues, and children's fiction.
