S Jaishankar deeply moved as Bhutan hosts Lord Buddha’s relics with warmth
Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has appreciated Bhutan for welcoming the sacred relics of Lord Buddha sent to the Himalayan nation.
Expressing his gratitude, Jaishankar wrote on X: "Deeply moved to see the warm welcome accorded by the Government and the people of Bhutan to the Sacred Relics of Lord Buddha."
Bhutan received the Sacred Relics of Lord Buddha from India at Tashichhodzong on Sunday.
Why are the relics important?
The Relics, known as the Piprahwa–Kapilavastu Relics, hold profound historical and spiritual significance, being among the most venerated objects in the global Buddhist tradition and offering a direct and tangible link to Lord Buddha’s physical presence and enduring blessings, as per a statement issued on the PMO, Bhutan's Facebook page.
Upon arrival, the Sacred Relics were carried in a Chipdrel procession and presented with a Guard of Honour by the armed forces in the Kuenrey courtyard of Tashichhodzong.
The Relics will be enshrined at the Grand Kuenrey of Tashichhodzong from 12 to 17 November 2025 for public display, in commemoration of the 70th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.
Modi wrote on X: "Heartfelt appreciation to the people and leadership of Bhutan for the reverent welcome accorded to the Sacred Relics of Lord Buddha from India."
Meanwhile, Indian PM Narendra Modi will visit Bhutan on Tuesday.
During his two-day visit to Bhutan, he will inaugurate a 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project in the Himalayan nation.
Modi will visit the nation from November 11 to November 12, as per a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs.
During the visit, the Prime Minister will receive an audience with Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan, and the two leaders will inaugurate the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, developed jointly by the Government of India and the Royal Government of Bhutan.
"Prime Minister will attend the celebrations dedicated to the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth King of Bhutan," MEA said in the statement.
Modi is also scheduled to meet his Bhutanese counterpart Tshering Tobgay.
