In a symbolic departure from tradition, Goa’s Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant inaugurated the festival by watering a Tulsi plant, emphasizing environmental sustainability.

Adding a new dimension to the opening, a grand carnival-style parade was held, where production houses presented creative tableaux inspired by Indian cinema.

The National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) celebrated its 50-year journey with a colorful display showcasing iconic films including Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, The Lunchbox, and Salaam Mumbai. Another highlight was a meticulously crafted tableau dedicated to Mahavatar Narsimha, which attracted significant attention.

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Sawant highlighted Goa’s growing stature as a film destination. “Goa is India’s most preferred shooting destination,” he said, noting the state’s world-class infrastructure, tourism industry, and filmmaker-friendly policies.

He added that initiatives such as the film finance scheme and single-window clearance system have strengthened Goa’s position in the global film industry.

Governor Raju, attending IFFI for the first time, expressed pride in the festival’s international scope. “This year, the festival brings together 270 films from 84 countries, offering a rich blend of world cinema, Indian cinema, and emerging talent. IFFI continues to be a meaningful platform for creative exchange and cinematic excellence,” he said.

The Governor also acknowledged the contributions of former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in establishing IFFI as a permanent festival in Goa.

The inaugural evening featured the screening of the opening film, The Blue Trail, a Brazilian production directed by Gabriel Mascaro, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival 2025.

IFFI 2025 will continue through November 28, concluding with a grand closing ceremony. Concurrently, the Waves Film Bazaar, inaugurated on 20 November, will run until November 24, showcasing emerging talent and industry networking opportunities.
