Veteran BJP MLA Dibachandra Hrangkhawl resigns from Assembly, to rejoin Congress
Veteran BJP MLA Dibachandra Hrangkhawl from Karamcherra (ST) assembly constituency on Wednesday resigned from Tripura legislative assembly, who will join Congress on Thursday.
Hrangkhawl is the eight MLA of the BJP-IPFT ruling alliance, who submitted his resignation just a month before the assembly elections.
Hrangkhawl accompanied by several Congress leaders including former MLA and senior leader Ashish Kumar Saha appeared in the chamber of assembly secretary and submitted his resignation letter to Assembly Secretary Bishnu Pada Karmakar as Speaker Ratan Chakraborty is now out of Tripura.
Assembly secretary Karmakar accepted his resignation in writing and will place the same before the speaker of the house on his arrival and has also completed the official process. Karmakar said that Mr Hrangkhawl's resignation would be accepted by the Speaker once he returns to the state.
Hrangkhawl speaking with media persons said that he would decide his future course of action very soon and of course he will be in politics.
Earlier, BJP MLAs Burba Mohan Tripura, Ashish Das, Sudip Roy Barman and Ashish Kumar Saha also quit the party and the Assembly after open differences with top leaders of ruling BJP and with resignation of Hrangkhawl , altogether 5 BJP MLAs has submitted their resignation before completion of their assembly tenure.
Ashish Das joined the Trinamool Congress last year but quit it in May this year while Roy Barman, also a former BJP Minister, and Saha joined the Congress in February this year and Sudip Roy Barman was re-elected to the state assembly for the sixth time in the by-elections held in June as a Congress candidate. Burba Mohan Tripura after his submission of resignation letter as MLA, joined Tipra-Motha.
On November 8th last, IPFT MLA and former minister from Asharambari Assembly constituency in Khowai district Mevar Kumar Jamatia had submitted his resignation as MLA from the state assembly and joined ‘Tipra Motha’ party. After the resignation of Jamatia, the IPFT's strength was reduced to five from eight.
It may be mentioned here that due to growing internal feud among leaders of IPFT, Jamatia was dropped from the state cabinet and Jamatia himself maintained distance with the IPFT.
Jamatia was the third IPFT MLA to submit their resignation as MLA of Tripura the Assembly since last year. On October 14 last, IPFT MLA Dhananjoy Tripura, accompanied by TIPRA supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma submitted his resignation letter to the Speaker, who immediately accepted it. Another IPFT MLA Brishaketu Debbarma also resigned from the Assembly in June last year and joined the Motha.
Meanwhile, Congress sources said that Hrangkhawl, along with a few other leaders of different parties, would join the Congress at a big public meeting here on Thursday.
Sudip Roy Barman, six other MLAs including Hrangkhawl and many leaders quit the Congress in 2016 and joined the Trinamool Congress. However, the next year, they joined the BJP.
In the last assembly polls, the BJP and IPFT secured 36 and 8 seats respectively in the 60 member house while the CPI(M )bagged 16 seats and now , ruling BJP have 36 MLAs, CPI(M) have 15 MLA and IPFT have 5 MLAs in the House.
