Woman's half-burnt body in Mirza:  All five accused involved in gruesome incident arrested

Amidst statewide uproar and political pressure, the police finally arrested the main accused involved in the gruesome incident, in which police and firefighters recovered  half-burnt body of a woman in a road at Mizra area of Gomati district on Friday.

Police sources said that based on the FIR registered against five miscreants including nephew of local BJP MLA, all five accused including main accused Litan Das (32) was arrested on Saturday midnight, while four other accused including  Anupam Majumder alias Manna, who is the nephew of BJP's Kakraban-Salgarh MLA Jitendra Majumder, Kinkar Das, Diptanu Das and Akash Das surrendered before the police on Saturday. The SP of the Sepahijala district has also suspended one ASI of police for dereliction of duty.

Police sources said that as per the complaint of Pankaj Sarkar, husband of the victim woman, Anjali Sarkar, an FIR has been registered against Anupam Majumder alais Manna, who is the nephew of BJP's Kakraban-Salgarh MLA Jitendra Majumder, Litan Das, Kinkar Das, Diptanu Das and Akash Das.

Police added that soon after registering the complaint at Kakrabon police station, they have launched a massive manhunt in different areas to arrest suspected accused and on Saturday evening four miscreants were arrested for their involvement in the incident.

 While, giving details of the incident, SP(Gomati) Kiran Kumar said that they have registered a case of abetment of suicide under section of 77/351(2)/114/(2)103(2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in the incident that happened in Mirza in the Kakrabon police station area. During massive manhunt on Saturday night, police managed to arrest main accused Litan Das.

While, on Sunday all five accused persons were produced before a court in Udaipur with five days police remand appeals and court sent them for three days police remand at Kakrabon police station.

Police sources said that medical report reports confirmed that there were no sign of rape and the lady has committed suicide after brawl and scuffle with suspected accused persons on Thursday evening at Mirza motor stand area.

One police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Sanjoy Sarkar was also suspended for negligence in duty and investigation of the incident going on.

It may be recalled here that  Anjali Sarkar’s half-burnt body of a woman was found on Saturday morning, following which her husband alleged that she died by suicide after being assaulted by associates of the local BJP MLA.

"Initially, we registered a case of unnatural death. Later, a case of abetment of suicide was registered. We have started an investigation. More sections under the BNS has been added based on information received during the investigation," said SP.

The woman's husband alleged that five persons, including Manna Majumder, who is the nephew of BJP's Kakraban-Salgarh MLA Jitendra Majumder, severely assaulted him and his wife on Friday night and they have also video of the incident.

Thereafter, the couple went to the police station to lodge a complaint, but they refused to accept it, alleged Pankaj Sarkar, husband of the victim lady.

He added that they returned home and went to sleep separately as they often do. On Friday morning, my wife's half-burnt body was found on a nearby road, said Pankaj and added that Manna Majumder and his companions are responsible for the death of his wife.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Saturday night through his social media said that “a detailed enquiry has been ordered into the Mirza incident. All those involved in this heinous crime will be brought to justice as per the law. In this connection, already 4 accused persons have been arrested.”

On Saturday, two teams of CPI (M) and Congress legislators visited the house of victim lady and met her husband and two children including son Priyankshu Sarkar (14) and daughter Debashree Sarkar (12) and demanded immediate police action.
